Charlie Turner, FIPS Website Administrator, Technology SIG facilitator, Canadian Ski Patrol (CSP) member, colleague and friend to FIPS members, passed away September 15, 2024.

Charlie brought his experience, his energy and his expertise to the Fédération Internationale des Patrouilles de Ski (FIPS). First attending a World Congress in Italy, he fast developed friends and colleagues internationally and offered his expertise and support wherever needed. Charlie first assisted in developing and distributing the Congress feedback questionnaires, and became the FIPS Website Administrator, updating and improving the site on an ongoing basis. He also provided support and interim leadership to the Technology SIG, chairing the most recent meetings at Riksgränsen. Upon arrival in Sweden, Charlie enthusiastically renewed old acquaintances and made new friends during the Congress. He was at all sessions and out on the snow enjoying the ski terrain as well as capturing photos of our activities. He was a proud member of the Canadian contingent, very much valuing his membership and involvement in FIPS. He stood for everything both organizations represent and strive to accomplish.

Charlie Turner was a true builder of the Canadian Ski Patrol. He joined the CSP, in 1973. Over the years he held most positions including Zone Training Officer, Zone President, Quebec Division Vice-President of Administration, National Vice-President of Operations, member of the Board of Directors, and National President.

Charlie’s historical knowledge of the CSP has oft been described as that of a ‘walking encyclopedia of the Ski Patrol’. He was a problem-solver, was never afraid to speak his mind, and did not deal in back-room politics; if he had something to say, he said it! Recently, he also worked closely with Brian Low at the National level supporting the ongoing development of the Instructor Certification Program (ICP) including the most recent changes implemented this season.

In recognition of his work in the CSP, Charlie received the Canadian Ski Patroller #472, the highest operational award in the CSP, in 1983. In 1998, he was recognized as national Life Member #39.

52 years of continuous service to the CSP and significant contribution to FIPS completed. Boots off, Charlie. We’ll take Last Sweep.
